The Substance Film

The filmmaker's bold commentary addresses the tyranny of women's appearance along with the feared consequences of ageing. Presence

Soderbergh pushes his creative boundaries through this innovative ghostly tale filmed completely through the eyes of the phantom. As a family featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe occupies their new suburban house, the camera – as the unseen entity – tracks their movements. Chloe seems conscious of the ghostly being, and it seems guarding her. However, the motive remains? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, featuring a surprise that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema Premiere

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

Nicolas Cage wholeheartedly adopts his cult stardom through this self-referential adventure. He plays a self-obsessed film star playing himself who accepts a lucrative offer to visit a birthday party in Mallorca for billionaire Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Recruited by government spies to gather intel on the alleged criminal, his “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, on Channel 4

The Black Phone

Derrickson's locked-room horror remains effective without requiring a follow-up. Located in 1970s Colorado, multiple kidnappings has rendered the children on edge. Once Finney is taken by the kidnapper and held captive in a basement, he fears the worst. But the non-functional line mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with spooky callers providing assistance, as the prophetic visions of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, the Film4 channel

This Dramatic Portrait

In the struggle between faith and wealth, the winner is obvious for Mammon in Michael Showalter's delightfully tacky film adaptation about the fallen religious broadcaster plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor plays the corrupt Bakker, who states early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye commence monetising the nation's religious faith. It's a spectacle of tacky decor, excessive cosmetics and hypocrisy, yet Chastain manages to present Tammy Faye in a likable light. Next Tuesday, late night, on Film4

The Spy Mystery

This week's another release from the filmmaker delivers a espionage tale as precise as the polo necks worn by Michael Fassbender's British agent. He receives a mission to discover a double agent among the team from five suspects – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. The two stars excel of deadpan cool, resulting in an engaging mental battle of deception or honesty unfolds. The supporting cast join in the clever spy entertainment.
