Government Official States MoD Looking at Potential Threat from Chinese Cars, with Staff Instructed to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

A defence official has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the potential security risks posed by Chinese-made vehicles, and personnel have been instructed to avoid talking about classified information in all cars.

Safety Guidance for MoD Staff

During a recently aired interview on LBC, Luke Pollard commented on reports that MoD staff have been instructed not to discuss secret information while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

He stated that the MoD is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but noted that security is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.

Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their car, not to have discussions at a secret classification in any kind of car, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in all vehicle, to only have those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone worried about security.

After it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using every cars from China, Pollard replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Wider Security Context

The announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off public transport and bring chaos to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel has been shining laser beams at RAF aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

This broader defence situation underscores the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in every areas of official activities, from vehicle usage to discussions practices.
