British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This action, to take out militants who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
